San Diego Wedding Rock Star Brit Jaye Photography 1

Who are the “San Diego Wedding Rock Stars?” Other San Diego wedding pros I’ve done weddings with here in the 619 (or nearby) that were awesome to work with, talented, friendly…you know, the kind of vendors you probably want for your wedding, right? Drum roll please…let me introduce you to Brit Kushner from Brit Jaye Photography.

We met a few months ago at Stella & Jose’s Ranch at Bandy Canyon wedding. While we didn’t have time for chatting during the wedding, we struck up a mutual respect for one another after the wedding. Brit is easily one of the hardest-working San Diego wedding photographers…and she is serious about what she does. Plus, we are both mothers of three-year-olds!

How Brit Jaye Photography start doing weddings?
I was in portrait photography and professional printing for almost 10 years. After photographing my brother-in-law’s wedding, I quickly realized I had found my passion. There was actually a moment– and lots of tears, when it felt like my weird collection of life experience had actually been leading me to that point. It was actually the perfect mix of experience. My degree is in story-telling, and my life experience has taught me what it’s like to be both in front and behind the camera. I am passionate about beautiful images, moments that become a story, and memories that last a lifetime. Now I specialize in love stories–weddings & engagements. It’s the seriously best.

What is your professional background? Do you attend workshops to improve your craft? Have certificates/degrees?
I definitely have a unique blend of experience that makes me the photographer that I am. I have 10 years of experience working in a studio/professional print lab and have been photographing weddings exclusively since 2012. I studied photography extensively in college and finished with a degree in storytelling (which heavily influences my photography). I also was a model for a number of years when I was younger, which is why I don’t do much posing now. I love to capture beauty in motion. I know how it feels to be in front of the camera, it can be really tough if a photographer doesn’t help you. A photographer that captures motion is usually easier to work with–you can get great photographs and don’t have to stop and think about what you are doing in front of the camera. It allows our couples to enjoy their day.

When I started, the world was still using film, and that is a big influencer on my style and shooting abilities, too. I also constantly pursue continuing education and consult with industry mentors. There are excellent resources specifically for wedding photographers–and I love learning new techniques and perspectives. I also sometimes take non-wedding related photography education. I feel like this really broadens my perspective in general. I especially love studying food and street photography, which is easily applied at weddings. You will often find me streaming photography education instead of TV–it’s dorky and I love it.

Favorite wedding blog & why?

Probably Junebug Weddings- there are so many unique ideas on there, and it’s just lots and lots of photographs. Amazing photographs by photographers whose work I really love. There is an emphasis on artistic photographic work–which is my passion.

When Brit Jaye Photography is not at a wedding on any given Saturday, what would you most likely be doing?
Outside adventuring with my family! My husband and I are outdoors people, we love to explore. We are from Ohio, so the southern California landscape never gets old! Also–my 3 year old son LOVES to throw rocks in the river. It’s his favorite.

What are your top 3 wedding accomplishments you are most proud of?
Seeing my work in print in a magazine that I love was definitely the greatest accomplishment for me. We also received the Editor’s Choice award from our publishing service that is only awarded to the top 5% of their photographers. This meant we were published more than 95% of other photographers, and everyone uses that publishing service. It was a huge honor. I was also named one of the top 25 wedding photographers in San Diego by Expertise.com this year. I know this is a 4th, but I also educate now. I teach middle school and high school photojournalism workshops from time to time at local schools. It’s so rewarding to see them learn so quickly. The students are so awesome.

Book both Brit Jaye Photography AND DJ Staci for your big day and you’ll get…Free uplighting from DJ Staci & a complementary engagement photo guestbook from Brit. (She uses the photos from the engagement session to make a professional phonebook, leaving lots of room for guests to sign in & around your photos. It’s really fun and great because you can just put it on your bookshelf after the wedding. Instant heirloom!)

Where have your weddings been published?

My work has been published on lots of wedding blogs. Today.com, The Knot, Wedding Wire, Snapknot, My Wedding, the Inspired Bride, Love + Wander, Ever Ours, and Rustic Wedding Chic to name a few. We are also published in print multiple times in “San Diego Style Weddings” magazine.

If you could tell engaged couples everywhere one thing, what would it be?
Have fun with your wedding! Ultimately your day is about you, replace stress with celebration. And, of course, the photographs and your spouse are the only things you get to keep after the wedding day.

Dish about what was important at your own wedding?
At my own wedding, the photographs were really gorgeous. I love how I remember our day because of our photographs. Our photographer captured moments that were so important to me, the real ones where I cried and hugged my dad, laughed with my mom, and vowed to love my husband forever. And I never had to tell her–she just knew. Hiring someone that knows weddings is hugely beneficial!
